Free accounting software that actually works. That was my skepticism two years ago, and Wave has spent every month since proving me wrong. No subscription fee for the core accounting and invoicing tools is genuinely rare in this space. As a solo bookkeeper handling my own clients and my own finances, I was spending more on software than some months justified. Wave cut that to zero. The paid add-ons (payroll, payment processing) are priced fairly, and I've never felt pushed into upgrading just to keep basic functionality running.
The invoicing workflow is clean and fast, receipt scanning does what it promises, and reconciling bank transactions has become a Monday morning ritual I don't dread anymore. A few reporting options feel a little thin compared to pricier tools, and customer support leans heavily on self-service docs, which can be frustrating when something breaks. But for the price? I find it genuinely hard to complain. Any freelancer who's tired of paying monthly for features they use twice a year should take a serious look at this.
