Independent bookshop owner here, came to Shopify five years ago when our brick-and-mortar shop needed an online presence we could actually maintain ourselves. The platform has grown with us from a few hundred SKUs to nearly nine thousand. Inventory sync between our in-store POS and the website finally just works after some early teething problems. The theme system is friendly enough that I made our last redesign without needing an agency. My ongoing frustration is the app ecosystem - solving any non-trivial problem means subscribing to yet another monthly app, and the costs stack up quickly for a small business. Customer support has been patient when I've had genuine confusion. I'd recommend Shopify to other independent retailers, but with a clear warning about the app cost creep.
